His Brother Echo is a sonic poetry performance by Augustine Paredes & Roman Steinmetz. It reimagines a dialogue between two echoing voices, searching for quiet amid turmoil and shifting power. The poem is read twice in two reverses, while a multichannel echoing vocal synth resonates.

When The Typhoon Ends, 2024

Presented during a lecture performance theorizing Filipino resilience within the context of typhoon calamities. This lecture performance will explore what ‘After Rain’ means in the context of the Philippines— a country that is often the eye of many catastrophic typhoons. Typhoon signal warnings have become a usual announcement in the evening news, and yet the country’s infrastructure don’t reflect this knowledge — resulting in casualties and damages that happen like deja vu. ‘After Rain’ is not regeneration nor renewal — but disaster and calamity.

Through a mix of poetry, storytelling, and immersive visuals, curator and cultural producer Anna Bernice delos Reyes and artist Augustine Paredes will take the audience through post-typhoon Philippines, which often happens in cycles, also highlighting how Filipinos embody wit and humor to wade through moments of despair.

Installation views of The Bitter Taste of Sweetness

The Bitter Taste of Sweetness is a site-specific installation completed during Augustine Paredes's AlUla Artist Residency in  2022 and supported by the Royal Commission of AlUla in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Integral to the work is a first-person story about a farmer-labourer hired by a farm owner looking to tend to his trees and harvest their dates. This story, where realistic and fantastic notes are mixed, is accompanied by a collection of poetry written from three perspectives: the universe’s, the palm tree’s, and the farmer’s. Both are central elements of the zine published by the artist, and are also the common thread to the set of shimmering paintings that he presents in a crystalline pavilion in the palm grove of Mabiti AlUla.

The inside of Augustine Paredes’s pavilion is bathed in the sounds of his poems, transformed into electronic lullabies that he composed throughout the residency.
